The "Ber" months are upon us and with them come an influx of donation requests. Each year, as the thermometer dips, Jo and I see an increase in requests for hats, scarves, mittens, etc for kiddos returning to school, newcomers arriving to the city, and folks who need a little warmth. Thanks to all of you who crafted during the Create-A-Thon we are going to be able to fulfill these requests! We had SO many item donations during the CAT that our lovely intake volunteers couldn't even make it through all the boxes in one week! WOW! What a beautiful community we are all a part of.
|
The financial gifts for the CAT keep coming in as well, (the USPS is a bit slow) and we SMASHED our $6,000 goal by nearly $2,000! We simply can't express our gratitude. Thanks to you, we can make this often chilly world feel a little bit warmer.
Now, onto the prize announcements! Over the past three years of the Create-A-Thon we have had Peace Pods and makers kindly duking it out for the Top Fundraising Pod prize and this year the award goes to....drum roll please...CHICKS WITH STICKS! This Peace Pod in South Denver has been active for years and we often see beautiful items come through intake from them. Congrats to all you fabulous Chicks with Sticks!
Our Top Fundraising Maker has chosen to remain anonymous, but that doesn't mean our gratitude has to be silent on the matter. In lieu of any prizes, the winner has asked for some crochet tools for a new crafter, and we are happy to oblige! |

We are so grateful to all the individual, solo makers out there who donated to the CAT and we are so proud to call you all part of the K4P family.
And finally, just a little reminder. If you are making local donations, please do not forget to email us and let us know who, what, and where you donated. Also, we would absolutely LOVE for you all to send in more pictures of your items, your Pods, and, when possible, your recipients. We love seeing the things you make and the people you impact, even when it doesn't come through the doors of K4P HQ. Until next month! -Kelly

Community Member of the Month: Kathleen B.
Our September Community Member of the Month is Kathleen B., from Rockville, Maryland, who learned to knit from her grandmother many years ago. As with so many other Knitting4Peace makers, Kathleen initially connected with K4P’s founder, Susan McKee, during one of her annual trips to Chautauqua Institute in New York. She was inspired by the mission of K4P and immediately began sharing knitted items each year as she returned to Chautauqua. In 2013, Kathleen began sending her items to the Denver headquarters and has since contributed over 1066 items! She has made scarves, baby blankets, hats, and booties for K4P. She also contributes lap robes and fidget toys to a group in her retirement community.
Kathleen’s favorite items are the Peace Pals she lovingly knits and regularly sends to K4P. She knits in the round and has developed her own patterns, beginning with 33 stitches to honor K4P’s “element of 3”. She always includes 3 buttons down the front of each Peace Pal and enjoys finding just the right color combinations that are bright and cheerful. Recently, Kathleen has begun using embroidery thread to make a small white dot in the pupils of the Peace Pals. This gives each Peace Pal a unique twinkle in their eye, adding to their engaging personalities. Kathleen’s special Peace Pals and other items have brought peace and comfort to children and adults all around the world. We loved seeing her during our CAT events and are so grateful for her partnership with us.
Thank you, Kathleen! |

The intricacies of Kathleen's Pals always leave us astonished! |

Yes! We accept quilts for babies and love to see them!
Although they are a small portion of the items we receive, we are able to readily find good homes for them. The sizes we need are the same as for our regular knitted/crocheted baby blankets—no smaller than 26” on each side and no larger than 60”. Please make sure you are using good quality fabric in child-friendly colors and patterns. We have seen some truly beautiful quilts lately! Please note that these are NOT the same as the “sleeping mats” we used to receive in the past. The sleeping mats must now be sent directly to the organization that distributes them overseas and address information is available on our website. As always, please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Will we ever have enough hats or mittens? Probably not!
Fall is just around the corner and these are 2 of our most requested items. I know it is important to all of us to meet as much of the need as possible. Your donations from the Create-a-thon have begun pouring in but we anticipate that the need will continue to be great so please, keep on making! Thank you so much for all you do! |

Please note:
Our donation intake is run solely by volunteers. Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to immediately acknowledge each package as it arrives. Remember, you can always track your package with your carrier.
Remember, mailing costs qualify as tax-deductible nonprofit donations. Keep your receipts! Due to a lack of storage, K4P cannot accept yarn donations unless they are new and still in the original wrapper. Thank you for understanding. |
